Hardwood Floor Cleaning Service

Most hardwood floors don’t need to be refinished nearly as often as people assume. What they usually need is a real cleaning, the kind that gets past the surface dirt a mop can’t touch and brings back the shine that’s been hiding under months (or years) of everyday grime.

Clark’s Hardwood Floors has been caring for hardwood in the Bay Area, including San Jose and Campbell, since 1985, and our hardwood floor cleaning service is built specifically for that job: restoring a floor’s finish without sanding, refinishing, or disrupting your home any more than necessary.

What a Deep Clean Actually Removes

Everyday mopping cleans the top layer. It doesn’t address what builds up underneath, such as the fine grit ground into the finish by foot traffic, the waxy haze left behind by the wrong cleaning products, or the dull film that forms over time from cooking oils, pet dander, and general household use.

Our hardwood floor deep cleaning service is designed to lift all of that out. We use the Bona professional cleaning system exclusively, a direct benefit of being a Bona Certified Craftsman charter member, one of only seven companies in the country trained at Bona’s facility in North Carolina, and the only one in California. That means the products we use on your floor are matched to your specific finish, not a one-size-fits-all solution pulled off a hardware store shelf.

The result is a floor that looks noticeably brighter and more even, with the haze gone and the natural finish able to do what it’s supposed to do again.

Cleaning vs. Refinishing: Not the Same Job

A deep clean is not refinishing, and it’s not a substitute for it either.

Refinishing means sanding a floor down to bare wood and applying an entirely new finish. It’s the right call when a floor has scratches that have worn through the surface, water damage, discoloration, or a finish that’s simply failed. Our refinishing service covers the end-to-end process, using our dust-free Atomic sanding system so the process doesn’t turn your home into a construction site.

A deep clean, on the other hand, works with the finish you already have. There’s no sanding, no dust, and no downtime, just a thorough professional clean that removes what’s built up on top of an otherwise healthy floor.

How to Tell Which One You Need

A simple way to think about it: if your floor looks dull or hazy but the finish itself is still intact (no bare wood showing through, no deep gouges, water isn’t soaking in where it shouldn’t), a deep clean is usually all it takes.

If you’re seeing specific problem spots instead (a few scratched or gouged boards, water stains, a section that’s cupped or warped), that’s usually a repair job rather than a whole-floor issue, and our hardwood floor repair service handles that without requiring you to redo the entire floor.

And if the finish has worn through more broadly, or the floor hasn’t been touched in years, a full refinish is probably the better long-term investment. We’re happy to walk through which of the three actually fits your floor before you commit to anything; that’s part of why we keep our estimates itemized. You’ll know exactly what you’re paying for and why.

Our Hardwood Floor Cleaning Process

Inspect the existing finish

We determine the condition and type of finish before cleaning.

Prepare the floor

Remove loose dirt and debris.

Deep clean

Use the appropriate Bona professional cleaning system.

Remove residue and buildup

Address embedded grime, haze, and residue.

Polish and inspect

Restore the appearance of the existing finish without sanding.

It’s also a good habit to build into your regular home maintenance. Hardwood lasts much longer when it’s cleaned regularly, rather than waiting until it looks like it needs help. If it’s been a while since your floors have had anything beyond a mop and bucket, this is usually the most affordable place to start.

FAQs

How often should hardwood floors be professionally cleaned?

Most homes do well with a professional deep clean once or twice a year, though it depends on foot traffic, pets, and how the floors are maintained day to day. High-traffic areas like entryways and kitchens tend to need attention more often than a quiet guest room. If it’s been over a year since your floors have seen anything beyond a mop and bucket, that’s usually a good sign it’s time.

Does hardwood floor cleaning require sanding?

No. Sanding is part of refinishing, not cleaning. A deep clean works entirely on top of your existing finish, no sanding, no dust, no removing material from the floor. If your floor needs sanding, that’s a sign you need refinishing rather than a cleaning.

How long does professional hardwood floor cleaning take?

Most residential jobs take a few hours, depending on square footage and how much furniture needs to move. It’s a same-day service in almost every case; there’s no multi-day process like there is with refinishing.

How long before I can walk on the floor?

You can typically walk on the floor again within an hour. The cleaning products we use are fast-drying and don’t leave the kind of residue or extended cure time you’d see with a new finish coat. We’ll let you know the specific timing before we leave, since it can shift slightly with humidity and how many coats or passes a floor needs.

Can you clean engineered hardwood?

Yes. Engineered hardwood has a genuine wood surface with the same type of finish as solid hardwood, so it responds to the same professional cleaning process.

Can professional cleaning remove scratches?

Not scratches that have gone into the wood itself; those need repair or refinishing, depending on how deep they are. What a professional cleaning can do is clear away the dirt and grime that make a floor look scratched and dull even when the finish is actually fine. If you’re seeing marks that don’t disappear with a clean, that’s a good time to ask us about repair instead.

What's the difference between cleaning, polishing, and refinishing?

Cleaning removes the dirt and buildup sitting on top of your existing finish. Polishing (or buffing) is the final pass in that same visit; it restores shine to the finish you already have, without adding anything new to the floor.

Refinishing is a different job entirely: sanding the floor down to bare wood and applying a brand-new finish. If your current finish is intact, cleaning and polishing get you most of the way there. If the finish itself is worn through, that’s when refinishing comes in.

Can you clean hardwood floors with pets in the home?

Yes, this is actually one of the more common reasons people book a cleaning. Pet hair, dander, and the grime tracked in from outside build up faster in pet households, and they settle into the finish in a way that regular mopping doesn’t fully address. The products we use are non-toxic and safe once dry, so there’s no concern about pets or kids being back on the floor shortly after we finish.

Where do you offer hardwood floor cleaning services?

We provide hardwood floor cleaning throughout the Bay Area, including San Jose, Campbell, Palo Alto, Mountain View, and out to the Peninsula in San Mateo County. Wherever your home is within our service area, the same Bona cleaning system and itemized pricing apply. Check our areas we serve page for full coverage.
