Hardwood Floor Repair

When part of a hardwood floor gets damaged, the instinct is often to assume the whole floor needs to be replaced or refinished. Most of the time, that’s not true. A handful of boards near an entryway, a section that took on water, a spot that’s been scratched down to bare wood- these are usually repair jobs, not floor-replacement jobs.

That’s the whole idea behind this service: we fix the damaged section so you don’t have to redo the entire floor. Clark’s Hardwood Floors has been repairing hardwood throughout the Bay Area since 1985, and it’s one of the services we do the most often.

Hardwood Floor Repair Services

Hardwood damage shows up in a fairly predictable set of ways. Here’s how we handle the ones we see most.

Hardwood Floor Board Replacement

This is the core of most repair work: removing damaged boards and replacing them with material that blends into the surrounding floor, rather than sitting as an obvious patch.

Hardwood Floor Scratch Repair

Surface scratches and worn spots in the finish don’t usually require sanding the whole room. In most cases, we can address the affected area directly, repairing the finish where it’s compromised without touching the rest of the floor. Deeper gouges that have gone through the finish into the wood itself may need a section re-sanded and blended, which we can also handle without a full-room refinish.

Hardwood Floor Water Damage Repair

Water is one of the more common causes of hardwood damage: a slow leak under an appliance, a spill that sat too long, or moisture rising from below. It typically shows up as staining, cupping (boards lifting slightly at the edges), or outright warping. We replace the affected boards and, just as importantly, look into what caused the moisture in the first place, so the same damage doesn’t reappear six months later.

Hardwood Floor Squeak Repair

A squeaky floor is usually a sign that a board has come loose from the subfloor, not that anything is structurally wrong. In most cases, we can fix this from above without pulling up flooring, a relatively quick fix for something that can be genuinely irritating to live with.

Pet-Damaged Hardwood Floor Repair

Years of claws, accidents, and general wear leave a specific kind of damage — scratched finish, discoloration, sometimes boards that have absorbed enough moisture to warp. We treat it the same way we’d treat any other localized damage: repair what’s affected, match it to the surrounding floor, and leave the rest of the room alone.

Parquet & Older Hardwood Floor Repair

Parquet and other older patterned floors are, more often than not, a repair rather than a replacement. These floors were frequently built to last, and the patterns themselves (herringbone, chevron, and other custom layouts) can usually be repaired piece by piece rather than torn out. This is a meaningful part of our repair work, particularly on older Bay Area homes with original hardwood still in place.

Repair vs. Refinishing: Which Do You Need?

Repair and refinishing solve different problems, and it’s worth knowing which one actually fits your floor before you call anyone.

If the damage is contained to a section, repair is almost always the faster and less expensive route. If wear or damage is spread across the whole floor, a full refinish makes more sense than trying to patch multiple areas separately. When you’re not sure which category you’re in, we’ll tell you honestly during the estimate.

How Much Does Hardwood Floor Repair Cost?

There’s no flat rate for hardwood floor repair, because the cost depends on the specifics of the job rather than a per-room average. What actually drives the price: how many boards need to be replaced, the type of hardwood involved, how available matching material is for that species and grade, how extensive the damage is, and how much work is involved in matching stain and finish to the surrounding floor.

Accessibility matters too; a repair in an open, easy-to-reach room costs less to execute than one that requires moving furniture or working around tight spaces. And if there’s an underlying moisture or subfloor issue, that gets addressed as part of the estimate rather than as a surprise afterward.

This is exactly why we itemize every estimate. You’ll see what you’re paying for: board replacement, stain matching, labor, instead of a single lump number with no explanation behind it. Small jobs get priced like small jobs.

If you’ve been putting off a repair because you assumed it was too small to bother with, it probably isn’t. Reach out for a free estimate; we’ll take a look, tell you what’s actually going on, and give you an honest, itemized quote.

No Job Too Small

Most flooring companies won’t send someone out for a single damaged board or a small water stain; it isn’t worth their time. We will. There’s no minimum job size on repair work. One board, one squeaky step, one scratched corner by the back door- if it’s bothering you, we’ll come look at it.

It’s not just a courtesy. A lot of our bigger jobs started as a small repair a few years earlier. We’d rather earn a customer’s trust by fixing five boards properly than lose it by telling them to call someone else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace just one hardwood floor board?

Yes. There’s no minimum job size; a single board is a normal repair for us, not an exception.

Can you match new wood to my existing floor?

In most cases, yes. Matching accounts for species, board width and thickness, grain, grade, age, stain color, finish sheen, and sun exposure, not just the type of wood. Our site-finishing experience is what makes a close match possible even on older floors.

Can you fix squeaky hardwood floors?

Yes, and it’s typically a straightforward fix from above without needing to remove any flooring.

Can scratches be repaired without refinishing the whole floor?

If the scratches are limited to a specific area, yes. Widespread scratching across the entire floor is usually better handled with a full refinish.

How do I know whether my floor needs repair or refinishing?

If the damage is contained to a section — a few boards, a water stain, a squeak — repair is usually the right call. If wear or scratching is spread across the entire floor, refinishing is typically the better long-term fix. See our comparison above, or ask us directly during your estimate.

Do you repair older hardwood and parquet floors?

Yes, and it’s a significant part of what we do. Parquet and original hardwood in older homes are usually repairable rather than requiring full replacement.

Do you have a minimum repair charge?

No. We take on small jobs that many flooring companies turn down.
